
Here are the plans for a
soil fertility probe. If the probe is used regularly and the results
interpreted correctly, it will become the most important tool you
own.
The total cost of materials should not exceed
AUD$10.00
PURCHASE
or PROCURE the following :-
- 800mm [ 31" ] long
X 10mm [ 3/8"
] dia. steel rod
- 180mm [ 7" ] long X 25mm [ 1" ] dia. steel tube [ pipe ]
HOW
TO FABRICATE THE SOIL FERTILITY PROBE :-
- grind / file both ends of steel rod at ~ 45
degrees
- place steel tube in vice [
parallel to ground ]
- drill a hole all the way through, big enough
for the rod
- push the rod through the hole until flush
- weld both sides [ top and bottom
] and then grind off excess weld
HOW
TO USE THE SOIL FERTILITY PROBE :-
Push the
probe into the ground before and after rain :-
- where the
grass is short
- where the
grass is long
- in the
middle of tussocks
- where ground
is bare
- middle of a
weed patch
- anywhere and
everywhere on your farm [ put it in
the back of the ute ]
HOW
TO INTERPRET THE RESLULTS OF THE SOIL FERTILITY PROBE :-
The deeper you can push the fertility probe into the
ground, the more soil life and moisture holding capability is in the
soil profile ! !
